2018 Middle School Recognitions

This year we opened up submissions to students in grades 7 and 8. Originally these youth were grouped together with high school students grades 9 through 12. After review of all submissions by the Directing Change Team and the regional and statewide judging periods, the Directing Change Team reviewed all submissions from students in middle school again and completed a separate round of judging. We would like to recognize the following outstanding film submissions from our younger (grades 7 and 8) participants. (Sorry, no cash prizes, just bragging rights!)

First Place: Esperanza en Nuestro Corazon
San Diego County
Rancho Minerva Middle School
Filmmakers: Paola Morales, Sinai Sanchez & Ana Perez
Advisor: Beth Duncan
Description: This film features a girl sharing her story of recovering from mental illness and hope for others.

Being raised in a hispanic household I have seen these issues with my own eyes. With this film, I wish to bring to light the issues in hispanic culture and raise awareness.

If you are experiencing an emotional crisis, are thinking about suicide or are concerned about a friend, call or text 988 for the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline (24/7)
Directing Change is part of statewide efforts to prevent suicide, reduce stigma and discrimination related to mental illness, and to promote the mental health and wellness of students. These initiatives are funded by counties through the Mental Health Services Act (Prop 63) and administered by the California Mental Health Services Authority (CalMHSA), an organization of county governments working to improve mental health outcomes for individuals, families and communities.
